Series: Nerf N Strike
Ammo capacity: 6 darts
Range: 20-25 feet
Released: 2009

The Nerf Recon CS-6 is a pretty cool Nerf gun in that it comes with five parts that you can snap on and off to customize the look and feel of your gun. The parts are mostly cosmetic, but theyre cool just the same, and can be used on other N-Strike guns including the Raider, Longshot, and Longstrike. With some practice, you can actually become pretty accurate with the flip-up sight.

The Recon uses the clip system, which I happen to love. Reloading with a backup clip is much faster and efficient than having to put in 6 individual darts in the heat of battle.

If you read a review of the Recon on sites like Amazon, youll probably read about a ton of jamming problems that it has. However, in my experience, almost every jam can be attributed to user error.

If you cock the Recon with a nice steady rhythm, you shouldnt have any jamming issues at all. Its when you get in a hurry that youll run into jamming problems, so just keep the motion steady and you should be fine. However, it is worth noting that if youre buying this Nerf gun for a kid who cant really control the rhythm as well as an adult can, they may get frustrated with jamming.

To use the Recon CS-6 to its fullest capabilities, youll have to use some batteries to activate the silly little laser sight (expect decent accuracy from no more than 15 feet). However, the gun has some bigger problems than the rather worthless nature of the sight.

In modding communities, the Recon has a bit of a bad name for using a reverse plunger system like the Deploy and Raider. The reverse plunger system limits the guns range when compared with a direct plunger system like the Longshot.

As a little tip, pointing the hole of the dart down in the clip can have a pretty significant impact on the range.

the recon is an o.k. gun if you are looking for a primary that uses clips but is not the longshot. I am going to start with the good sides. well all the parts the come off of with for one. It also is a great secondary. It has o.k. range when you dont have the extension barrel on. I have to say that the recon does have terrible range whan fully assembled. It also comes with a sight wich is junk and a laser sight which is crap.If you buy a recon dont use the sight, laserpointer or the barrel extention and you will be o.k. in a nerf war.

The Recon is a good gun. Its not quite like the others (even the longshot) in looks and in operation, and I find the customisation acually gives you the flexability of several differant guns rather then having to get all of them and carry them. There are 3 distinct modes I use for differant styles of combat.

Pistol (Gun without componants)

While it is a bit of a bulky pistol, what this does let you do is not have to carry another pistol on you. You still can if you want a bit of extra firepower but what you can do instead is just carry extra clips as your side-arm

Submachine gun (Gun plus stock)

Whats nice about this setup is you can constantly keep your hand on the cocking mechanism and use your shoulder to help support the gun. This may not be as accurate but if you keep a smooth cocking action you can usually get a decent rate of fire. Getting a flipclip or the CS-35 drum is highly recommended.

Assault Rifle (Gun plus stock and barrel)

Now I know people complain about the barrel and it takes away range and all this other stuff, but Ive done quite a bit of firing testing and the truth of the matter is yes it does take away a bit of range, but it does tighten your firing group by a significant amount. And if youre trying to fight at those extreme long ranges, youre better off using a longshot. So for this mode, your fire rate will be a bit slower then the submachine gun because you need to keep your other hand down to help with the aim, but you will get much greater accuracy. Now remember though that you still need to fight at your effective range. So even if youve modded your gun to shoot about 50 feet, Id be trying to fight at about 30-40 because thats where youre going to have your best use of accuracy. Now while you can use the sights, I personally prefer not to but they do work if used right.

In summery the CS-6 Recon is not a one dimensonal gun. Its not like most nerf guns where its good at doing one thing and thats it. Its very much a flexable peice of equipment and if you make best use of its differant modes, you can react to changing situations with the best tool for the job without having to carry and armoury on your back.

The Recon CS-6 looks pretty good, I tried it at my friends and everything except the power and reliability, it was really fun. I like the removable parts on it and it made the gun much better to play with. Im getting this soon and im looking forward to getting the Longshot CS-6. I tried out the Raider CS-35 and I think, with the Raiders power and accuracy the Recon would be the best by far. But thats my opinion and others might differ. I love Nerf guns and im going to try to mod them.

The CS-6 Recon is one of the most intimidating and awesome looking nerf guns Ive seen. I bought it for my son this Xmas with full intentions of using it as my main battle rifle! lol

Pros: All combinations of the available equipment make the rifle look great. The magazine storage in the stock is cool. Range Report: When I fired 18 streamlines level from eye level (Im 58) the pistol portion got 20-25ft consistently with 3 dropping @ 15ft and 3 hitting 30-35ft. With the really cool-looking barrel attachment on I got: 7 darts @ 15ft, 3 @ 27-30ft and 8 @ 20-25ft. When firing @ an angle the Recon w/barrel can reach 35ft. Angled firing without the barrel got about 45ft max. The barrel does increase accuracy. I love that the Raiders drum fits in the Recon.

Cons: If it worked half as good as it looks, it would be the best Nerf gun ever. Unfortunately, it doesnt. The first two days we had this gun it jammed atleast 1 out of 3 darts. It chewed them up, bent them, ripped parts of them and was completely unreliable. I went from thinking I found my new favorite (over the maverick) to hating it. My 7yr old son jammed nearly every dart. It got put back in the box to be returned. I gave it another try today & after putting nearly 100 darts through it, it has only jammed once. Im not sure what the issue is/was. I dislike the 6 round magazines. The double clip helps that out, tho. The barrel extension really hurts the range. After playing with it over the last few hours, Ive found the Recon to be very fussy about the ammo it takes. The darts must be in very good shape, the magazine must be seated very well, the darts should be as far back in the magazine as you can get them and the gun must be cocked smoothly. Rapid, sloppy cocking can cause misfeeds.

Overall: Because this gun has worked all day today, I give it a generous 7 out of 10. I recommend getting the Raider, it is ridiculously awesome! The Recons jamming and lack of range makes it nearly unusable, but if you can get it to work, it will atleast make for a good looking, serviceable gun.

the recon is not really good for rapid fire, keep it smooth and steady and you wont experience jams except on rare occasions, to improve range take out the air restrictors and you will have a much better gun :)

Bought this gun a while ago. Regretted it after the novelty of all the accessories wore off. The cocking mechanism is slow and difficult if used properly and jams if not. Aiming is near impossible due to the positioning of the tac rails and the horrendous range. The stock blocks you from aiming without the sight and the barrel shortens your range. The laser never stays on and cant be used except at point blank. This is best used as a pistol, but why pay so much for a pistol? Buy a nitefinder, the laser works and its deadly accurate, mine cost me only three British pounds too.

Recon looks very cool but its crap. If nerf was real war it would get you killed way faster than you can force the slide forward and work out the range.

cullenski June 15, 2011 at 12:18 pm

what the heck!!! The recon is, if used properly, a great gun. I beat 2 guys with mavericks with it, and it only jammed when I first used it without any real skill. I give it 8/10 because u need the stock to have a great battle.

Reply

Jliang June 30, 2011 at 8:18 pm

I agree with cullenski. To fire the Recon, you need a steady rhythm. Even though the Raiders internal components are identical to the Recons, the Recon is not capable of Slam-firing; it has a different component layout. Dont try to fire it too quickly, as it is not designed to be a sub-machine gun. Its a rifle. Just as you would never try to slam-fire a .22, just cock it, aim with the flip-up sight (It works better than the Laser sight, but just keep the laser on the bottom and make it look totally boss) and fire. Use it more as a sniper or assault rifle, not something to run into a furball with.

I work at HP and we have NERF gun wars about once every 2 weeks. I bought the Maverik just to have one and got pwnd so I went and got a Recon and i am pretty impressed for $20. I also bought the double flip clip thing so I can reload more darts quick. Sometimes the longer barrel slows down the dart, but most of the time I am getting a distance between 30-50 feet and its very acurate most of the time. Awesome!

i have been having nerf wars for 3 years at least this was my second nerf gun.the good things about this gun is the decent range the tactical rails and the accesories(mine came with a scope).but after years of nerf wars mine seizes up when i need it most and i have to wait 5-10 min. for it to work again. without the barrel or stock it is a nice pistol.

The Recon is a great gun it is fully customizable for long range, close quarter and enforcement missions. The butt is quite flimsy but is still hard to break. the darts fire at different ranges after you have had it for a while. Some of the darts get stuck as I fond out after three weeks of having it and I had to buy a refill even though I had a double the darts pack.

The Recon is a good Nerf gun if you want a decent gun with some firepower and a decent fire rate. Id give it an 8.5/10 without the barrel.

This ROCKS! mine could reach 35 feet with barrel and around 25 feet without barrel Ive used it in nerf battle and I won it just 5 minutes or so (I was looking at my watch) and I was able to snipe someone at 30 feet without the person noticing.

Ok Ive been reading some of the reviews on this gun, and i have to say, they are quite wrong. The recon is a supreb gun, with high reliability. Although they are right about the bad range, let me remind you that this is a nerf gun, not an air rifle, not an airsfot gun, and definatly not a REAL gun. The best way to use this gun, is without the barrle, but with the stock, using a custom tac light made by krazy gluing a flashlight to the yellow part of a recon flip-up sight(taking the sight itself of, leaving the base on), and with a flip clip, plus a singal clip in the stock. DO NOT USE A RAIDER STOCK!

I do agree that the Recon CS-6 can be a bit finicky with darts. If you use ones that have been squashed, they are fare more likely to jam, but jamming is not a significant problem as some seem to have experienced. The trick is to make your re-loading action as smooth as possible. Oh, and use good darts.

The CS-6 Recon comes into its own if you use an 18-dart clip straight up, and you use a 6-dart clip as your back-up. The 18-dart clip gives you plenty of ammo to make an initial assault, and having the 6 in the short clip in the butt as a back-up is also most useful. It lets you know that you have exactly 6 shots with which to defend yourself if your attack fails and you have to retreat.

Use it without the barrel for close-quarter combat such as jungle or urban warfare style battles. Without the barrel, your range is better, but accuracy does suffer. It is a far better all-rounder weapon for NERF wars than other weapons. It reloads and cocks faster than the Longstrike CS-6. A couple of 18-dart clips will make this a far more useful weapon. I have not yet tried the 35-dart drum with the Recon CS-6, but I suspect the 18-dart clips would be more useful as several of them are more easily carried than the drums.

Reply

Jliang June 30, 2011 at 8:25 pm

I beg to differ. Your friend did do something wrong. When you mod this gun, the most common way is to remove the Air Restrictor (AR) which protects the bolt as it is released by a spring when you pull the trigger. Its purpose is to protect the bolt with an air cushion due to its immense pressure from being launched. When you remove the AR, you have to pad or otherwise protect the bolt from the stresses created by the now direct impact with the Bolt-sled. Thats why it exploded. The back of the bold simply took too much pressure, and snapped off, catapulting itself into your unfortunate friends eye. This thing can be modded, trust me. That was only the first of multiple mods you can do on this thing.

The Recon CS-6. This has to be one of the best guns nerf brought out. I personally think this particular gun has been under-rated. Yes it does jam and yes it can munch up your darts, but I have found this is due to human error and rough, fast cocking. This gun is not designed to be cocked fast (if you want fast, the Raider CS-35 or the Vulcan is your gun). Although the cocking system itself isnt very sturdy, it doesnt need to be due to its pinpoint accuracy. When I am in the heat of battle, I for one dont fire random shots here and there, Im a single fire guy. The trick to reload this awesome weapon is to cock it back, wait a second, then cock it forward. Keep the gun level and if you have placed the darts into the clip properly, the gun wont jam or shred those little orange darts ;) I have used my neighbors Recon CS-6 multiple times (around 5-6 times) all day, and it has only jammed once, the same goes for my gun.

Now the 5 interchangeable attachments. Some say they are for cosmetic purposes only. I disagree. Each part serves a valuable purpose on this gun. If you are a sharp shooter (eg. accuracy based shooter) the barrel attachment is for you. The barrel increases the accuracy by a longshot (bad joke there lol). As stated multiple times, yes it does decrease the range. Now if you are a ranged shooter (eg. looking to fire upon those wussy guys with the Longshot, or Longstrike) then remove the barrel, and place the stock on the back. The stock will help maintain stability and increase human accuracy to make up for the loss of the barrel. The flip-up sight and tactical laser/flashlight is a personal choice. If you find it easier to aim down the sights remove both attachments and aim down the Tactical Rail (I found this easier with the Nite Finder Ex-3). for those who fire from the hip, use the laser. And finally for those looking for a simple limited targeting system, use the flip-up sight.

The only downside I have found with this weapon is the ever-so-bad range. for such a long gun, you would have thought that the range would be a lot better. As I am speaking for all the N-Strike Rifles out the at the moment. The Longstrike and Longshot are both supposed to be based on a sniper rifle, they have a range similar to the Recon CS-6 (without the barrel).

All in all, the Recon CS-6 has to be the most versatile Nerf gun so far. I have had no problems with my just recently purchased Recon CS-6 and none whatsoever with my neighbors. I would rate the Recon CS-6 a 9.5 out of 10. It would be a 10 if the reloading system was just a tad more sturdy for those fast-slam re-loaders, if the standard package came with more than just one clip with 6 darts and if the clip size was increased to a 18 dart clip rather than a 6 dart clip.

Stay sharp all Nerf gunners, Soap.

The blaster itself is manually loaded and fired. However, the laser sight does need two AAA batteries to operate. If you dont have any, dont sweat. put the sight on the bottom anyways; It looks boss. Just aim down the Tac Rail or use the flip-up sight.

I have to say, after reading the comments, some of them do not relate to what I know as my Recon. I slap on a Raider stock for extra accuracy, because of the lack of support the Recon stock gives you. I also give it a drum clip from the Raider, to make up for not having a clip in the stock. I use the light sometimes for in-the-dark Nerf wars, as it gives sufficient light. Usually, without the barrel, light, or flip sight, it can be deadly at close and semi-medium ranges, even if it isnt quite the deploy. It looks pretty awesome with only a barrel on it, like some spec-ops gun. Overall, it is a pretty good gun.

Reply

Austin Poley January 4, 2011 at 4:59 pm

This gun SUCKS. The only thing good about it is the extra attachments 4 my other guns. I can probably get a range of about 10 ft MAX. It also comes in handy for keeping my little 4 yr old cousin occupied playing shoot the bad guys as he dies and flings it down the stairs. The Longshot has a better range and thats saying somthing.

BTW, your Longshots probably a dud if youre talking about it like that. Just so you know. It should fire 35-45 ft. WITH the barrel extension.

I got this gun for Christmas. Its my first CS gun, and it is quite good. It comes with five components: the main gun,a stock which can hold an extra clip, a flip-up sight, a barrel extension, and a red dot/torch. The red dot is pretty rubbish because darts dip so much, but the flip-up sight and barrel extension work well together. The flip-up sight can be accurate up to about 6/7m away. However, I find that about 2 in 6 darts veer slightly. Anyway, here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
Alright reload time-you can just pull the clip release switch thing and the clip simply falls to the ground, allowing you to just take a spare clip (sold separately) off your stock and shove that into the loading chamber.
Hole for a spare dart in the handle.
Accurate flip-up sight.
Alright range-about 6/7m
Looks pretty cool.

Cons:
Without the flip-up sight, the range with the barrel extension attached pretty bad.
Red dot thing is rubbish-makes an alright torch though.
Its a bit cumbersome with the barrel extension on.

Overall, this gun is pretty awesome and a great first CS gun.

I have searched all the stores in Australia and I cant seem to find one. From this result I assume this kit isnt available in Australia. Am I wrong or do I have to order one through e-bay?

A superb gun, though the rate of fire is awkward if you cant maintain a steady rhythm when firing and reloading the blaster, it is however compatible with all nerf accessories and stocks which is an impressive feature. Over all the gun is most effective for tactical and stealth ops, however can be useful for medium range combat due to its easy loading but unimpressive range. Cronefire7

I recently bought two of these for my son and his mates. Had jamming problems and got through a number of new darts in the process. A very easy fix is to give all the moving bits including the trigger and especially the inside and outside of the loading mechanism along the full length if their travel a generous spray of silicone spray, works a dream and only had one jam in the next two hour war and that was with two children who had never used them before, cost about £5.

i have the recon and is a great pistol,i use mine with the exstended 18 dart clip and i can get of the ting in abought30 seconds with a steady pase.it jams alot do to me pumping it to fast,it has this strange tendency to have a bullet in the camber and one ready to be shot so i have to go in and pick it out my self but it is a great pistol even though i only use the stock from the rader 8/10

Just had my mates to buy this for me from Target while I was at work, got an extra 12 darts and 2 clips (win for my Stampede) $29 for the toy sale (Aus. this is). Ive used that same mates Recon in the past and did find that cocking like a cowboy jams it up something fierce, so I suggest some dart modifications, such as threading glued up straws in the shaft of the dart. Hot glue works wonders. This will help the darts keep their shape, so the plunger will like them more. :D another mod I recommend is running metal poles in the stock instead of the plastic so itll be very sturdy.
Remember its called Recon not Dart Spammer. Recon missions are about spying and not being noticed and using few darts while stalking your prey. Think about that when youre nerf waring.

The recon-cs6 it`s a very good weapon, the only day i got her jammed was because i tried put other type of dart or by putting a defective bullet, The only things I dislike about it is that the stock bends very easy if you force and the laser range is very weak. the aim is very good `cause you can use it by two ways, one is with it open so you can use it like a grenade launcher, or you can let it closed and aim by aligning the small holes with the end of the weapon.

sry for bad english because i`m brazilian.

The jamming problems are real and NOT user error. I bought this for my kid, took it out of the box, loaded the clip, cocked it once, fired once, and it was jammed. Had to shake the gun and add a bit of percussive maintenance before the slide would work. Shot two more darts, slowly and carefully, and the next one jammed. Had one more good shot and it jammed again on after the final dart.

With all the positive comments about this model, I can only conclude that some of the guns are bad and we got a bad one.
